Jaffna Fort
History, architecture, and culture aficionados should all make time to see Jaffna Fort, which is situated on Sri Lanka’s northern coast. The fort, which was first constructed by the Portuguese in the 17th century and subsequently altered by the Dutch and British, has striking ramparts and bastions that served as a deterrent against attackers. Today, guests are free to explore the ramparts and take in expansive views of the Indian Ocean and the Jaffna peninsula. The gatehouse and walls’ architecture clearly date back to the Dutch era, and a modest museum offers details on the fort’s past rulers. A library and an information center are also located within the fort. With street vendors selling snacks and drinks and traditional dance performances providing cultural experiences, the fort serves as a bustling gathering place for the residents.
