Jaffna Public Library

Constructed in 1933, the Jaffna Public Library is a noteworthy cultural icon located in the northern peninsula of Sri Lanka. At one point, it was one of the biggest libraries in Asia, with more than 97,000 books and manuscripts. However, a sizable collection of historical and cultural assets were destroyed when it was demolished in 1981 during the civil war. Reconstructed and reopened in 2001, it represents hope and the value of knowledge preservation. Both Tamil and English readers can now find an impressive selection of recently published books in the library. In addition, it acts as a community center by providing free Wi-Fi so that guests can browse the internet and obtain information sources. The personnel of the library are renowned for their assistance in locating information. A trip to the library provides an insight into the city’s dedication to education and knowledge exchange, as well as its rich literary legacy.
